advice needed for bannister

We have just had a new bannister installed on 3 levels and it looks fab!!! The joiner was excellent. My question is how to keep it looking the colour it is. Its pine and i love it but have been told that once i varnish it it will go a darker colour and gradually darken to an orange colour. I tested a piece with varnish and it does look orangy...i HATE orange wood. What can i do? Someone advised to bleach it then wax but my builder said this would make the wood white?
Any suggestions please

Can i bleach with house hold bleach or do i need something specific?
