We moved into a new build George Wimpey house 4.5 years ago and it had an Ideal iSTOR HE260 boiler fitted. Yesterday the boiler completely died, nothing was showing on the display at all. I phoned up a local plumber that had been recommended to me and when I told him which boiler we have he said he wouldnt touch it with a bargepole and most plumbers that he knows wouldn'e either and he advised that we contact Ideal directly.

We called Ideal and explained the problem and as we have a 7 day old baby they agreed to come out this morning to have a look at it and told us we needed to pay £245 in advance, this would cover the call out fee and any parts or labour needed.

When they came out this morning they took the boiler apart and the insides had completely corroded, it looked like it had been sat at the bottom of the sea for years. He said at that time that this was more than likely down to incorrect installation and he condemned the boiler and shut down the boiler and emertion completely. The Ideal engineer told us that it was probably down to incorrect installation, but that he wasn't allowed to point the finger) On the advice note he wrote "immediately dangerous because combustion case failure due to condense leakage

We called our home insurers to see if our boiler was covered by our insurance and was advised that it wasn't. We then called George Wimpey and explained the problem to them. We were asked to fax through the advice note with a covering letter as if it was an installation fault we would still be under guarantee for 6 years, and they would forward it on to their installers to investigate (which we did at 12pm today)

At 6pm we got a phone call from the installer who was very cocky and told us that there was no way that it was installed incorrectly as he had done the installation himself and therefore it couldn't be incorrect. He said he had installed a lot of them on this estate, we know of quite a few people on our estate who have been having problems with their boilers too. (He would also have been the person who would/should have installed the emertion switch next to the boiler, but this had never actually been connected, the cable was there but it hadn't been connected for some reason, we had it connected, but when it was switched on the cable that had been put onto the emertion got so hot it felt like it was going to melt so it was switched off and never used again.)
This installer has refused point blank to come and look at the boiler, he just kept reiterating that his work wouldn't be wrong. he said that he had spoken to Ideal and that they wouldn't point the finger at him and that he would be getting back to Wimpey and telling them that there was no way that he was at fault.
We told him that this wasn't good enough as Wimpey and Ideal are now closed until Monday morning and we are without water and heating for the forseeable future, and we need to have a supply of hot water and heating with having 2 very young children in the house.

Has anyone got any advice on how we get this resolved, or where we turn next?

Has the unit been serviced
It should have been serviced every 12 months if it has been serviced and had an installation fault it should have been spotted.
have you spoken to your service engineer.

Sorry you brought a house with a ideal, ideal will get out of everything I'm afraid I wouldn't point the finger at the original fitter as he wouldn't as a rule remove the combustion case on fitting! Has it every been serviced? Sound like a leak of condensation from the unit lack of maintenance and a real cheap boiler with even worse customer support. Why do you think the other engineer didn't want to go near it they are piles of junk that would be better at the bottom of the sea, sorry to be harsh but you will have to swallow the cost of a new unit. As for the wire the sparky should have fitted that but if you up grade the wire to a 30amp cable then it won't burn out or get hot a little warm but be ok.

Thats what I suspect

You have no redress if you have not followed the manufacturer instructions. Our advice here is based on the assumption that it hasn't seen anyone for 4 years, because normally customers like to blame the last person on site

Annual servicing allows issues to be spotted and catastrophic damage averted. A small leak of condense, or a blocked siphon can do a lot of damage if left until it fails.

You will now need a new boiler.

The immersion heater cable, if 3 core 1.5mm (check, it is sometimes embossed on the sheath), will get warm in operation. This is nothing to worry about. NB: It carries 13A, not 30A.

Having young children doesn't really constitute an emergency, they can go without HW for days. My wife can't though.

Simple. Find a good, local boiler breakdown specialist, and ask him to repair your boiler, service what needs servicing, and check over the whole system whilst he is at it.

i would just get boiler swaped t
and get a service contract
and fit magnetic filter as well

Ideal boilers are awful for reliability.
It could be that no inhibitor was put in the system hence the corrosion.
But my advice would be remove the boiler and have a
boiler of any other make installed.

Unfortunately no, we haven't had the boiler serviced, we were told to expect this boiler to last at last 10 - 15 years, so this has come as a huge shock to us. We were told that the boiler is totally irrepairable. This model has now been discontinued, but the engineer from ideal told us we may be able to pick one up, but to expect to pay around £2000, is this correct?
I don't want to get another Ideal boiler, but we are very concerned at how much it would cost to change the layout of the pipes etc as he said these boilers were specifically chosen because of the fact that there are 3 bathrooms, the shower runs from it etc and it would provide gthe best water pressure, I know nothing about boilers so don't know how true this is.

Also do you think we have some redress with Ideal about getting some of the £245 fee back as they didn't attempt a repair, or do we just have to accept that they have charged us £245 to shut our boiler down?

If Ideal charged £245 and said they would come and fix it then that is what they should have done regardless of what was wrong with it.!!!!
Or is it me???

You would be insane to get another one of these. I have a few in my area that I deal with and always prepare myself to be there for a while as they always have problems.

Get rid of it, it will be worth it in the long run

The fact that ideal is the only suitable boiler is a load of poo. You can get all different KW boilers in any make.

Don't get another ideal, invest in a Vaillant or a Worcester, something that will last! - don't forget an annual service to keep it tip top.

You're looking around £1500 - £2000 for boiler swap (top end vaillant included). I wouldn't pay more than £1800

if these are cheap boilers and cost £2000, how much should we expect to be paying for a new decent boiler as unfortunately with having a new baby we have very little money at the moment with myself being on maternity leave.
