Morning guys and girls,

im hoping you guys and girls can help me.

I have a rented place and this morning I went to plug in the portable heater in the electric socket and went to turn it on at the mains...nothing..the radio that I had on goes dead..

right what do I do? can call the land lord as he's on holiday..

I locate the "fuse box" and it looks similar to the image attached(thanks wiki:))

so no nothing except the lights..the "black" switch in the middle marked out in a red square is on off. it wont switch back to on and stay there.

any ideas guys and girls? im hoping someone can point me in the right direction or tonight there will be no hot food and just cold water for me tonight:(

ps its a wylex brand it that helps at all???

Unplug everything (don't just switch off) and see if you can then reset this breaker.

If not turn off the main switch and see if it will then reset.

Please say all the words and numbers that are on the breaker that seems to have tripped. I am especially interested to know if it has the word "Test" on it.

many thanks for the quick reply

will aim to attach a pic.

the switch in the red box as illustrated in the red box does indeed state"test", this is going off the top of my head. next to the black switch(highlighted in red on the image) is a little cream square switch which states the "test" and the black bigger switch next to it, stating on/off.

right will see if I can attach pic so you can see all what im babbling on about:)

appreciate the help given. thanks.

What seams a bit silly is the fact that the fridge circuit has been put on the RCD side of the CU, & not on the non-RCD side of the CU. This has somewhat defeated the purpose of have the fridge on its own circuit.

Stating the obvious here but... have you unplugged the portable heater and then tried resetting the RCD as it sounds from your description that its the heater thats faulty.

Also, if the RCD trips to a half way position you need to switch it off before you can switch it back on again.

hi guys and girls,

many thanks for your tips, i unplugged everything and reset and it worked a treat! i think the heater was the culprit, and ideas of how to save it? if i unscrew the plug, what am i looking for? a black fuse?

no. it is not an overload problem. there is a very slim chance you might find an incorrect wire, but more likely it is earth leakage which tends to occur with age. If your heater has a metal enclosure it might be live

it is also possible that you have earth leakage from a number of appliances or poor wiring, and the heater was just the last one which increased the leakage above tripping level.

leakage most often occurs in watery appliances like kettles, washing machines, tea urns, immersion heaters, boilers and their pumps, but also heating elements like ovens. If there are any outdoor services such as lighting, fountains or lawn-mower-sockets, they are often damp due to rain and dew.
