Cant i just drain the whole system instead to save myself this headache!

Last question, would I need to isolate the cold water supply?

Yes. As described in the post you quoted - turn off the cold water isolation valve and open a hot tap.
Expect some water to remain in the boiler and escape when you start to unscrew things.
