Inverters are very common equipment on boats and motorhomes etc rather than cars. You must take into account that most batteries shouldn't really be discharged below about 50% of capacity. You also need to ascertain what wave form you need as some equipment needs the more expansive pure sine wave inverters rather than the cheaper modified or quasi sine wave versions. I have heard of people having problems with thyrister controlled devices and variable speed power tools.
The split charge relay mentioned by Hitachimad is a good method of charging several batteries and is commonly used on smaller boats, the bigger ones having 2 alternators fitted instead. Alternator charge controllers are also available which make your alternator give out its full output (which they don't usually do on cars), Here is a site which you may find interesting, it is for boating but the principles are exactly the same for cars.
