When i turn on the cold tap on the bathroom sink, and as soon as the flow rate i want is reached (half a second), the tap makes one loud bang under the floorboards (like the bangs when the water's just been turned on and theres air in the pipes still being forced out of the tap), and the water flow rate drops to a fine trickle, i have to turn the tap another whole turn to get the flow i want. Whats going on????

Problem with the washer or mechanism in the tap. It shuts off suddenly, causing the water flow to stop abruptly, which it does not like.

Tap needs examining, rewashering, greasing, etc. depending on type.

Just tried to take a picture but my 2 megapixel camera phone is playing up. It's a mixer tap, built in plug release. Old-fashioned "+" shaped handles (about 6 years old). You saying we are doing it damage by using it in this state?
