I have a baxi combi 80 e which is approx 7 years old I think. When the heating is on and the boiler temp control is past halfway it makes a really loud whistling noise. When the temp control is at half or less this stops. I had Brittish Gas out today as I have a homecare agreement and the engineer said that this is limescale in the heat exchanger and the only way to cure it is a power flush at approx £600 or to leave the temp control down at half. Is this correct?

Fraser, do you have limescale in your kettle? If not, then it cannot be limescale in the boiler heat exchanger either. Could be sedimented, but lime scale in Scotland? I wonder if the chap has a 'checklist' to fit the faults

I ain't got a check list and I work for BG... whistling noise could be some sort of restriction in pipework; flue seals; or even gas valve. Like you said if there's no limescale request a senior engineer or manager (within 90 days cos there's a load being made redundant after that)

i phoned them up earlier and they are sending an engineer back tomorrow, hopefully not the same one as he didn't fill me with confidence

Tell the BG engineer to follow these instructions.

Switch off power.

Gain access to PCB, identify potentiometer marked 'Max R' turn this from the 5 O'clock position to to the 11 O'clock position.

Reassemble in reverse order.

Switch power on.
