Best wood to box in some pipes and paint

Hi all I was looking for some advice on boxing in some pipes and what would be the best wood To use so I can paint it afterwards I was thinking mdf with some good primer but others have told me 6mm ply things is the wall isnt exactly straight being an old house and looking at the wall around the pipes its clear they was boxed in before but for some reason has been removed...

6mm ply will require a frame first, 18mm mdf does not and paints up better.
