Hi

Am I being a bit too basic here, but in order to board just a section of the loft.... Do I just measure the space between the joists, buy some bored that spans the gap (well, a little less so that you can support the end of 2 boards on one joists).... Making sure that it will fit through the loft hatch first.

I then check that there are no wires on the joist itself.

Get some screws

Smash em in?

Yeah...
A little simplistic! ;)
There is more to think about regarding joist size, board loading, air gaps to insulation etc.
I found the Loft Zone - Store Floor kits really useful: https://www.loftzone.co.uk/product/storefloor/
They are tested to be used on slim joists. You space the kit out to match the board width, so no cutting of boards is required.
Might be a little pricey for some, but the simplicity of installation sold it for me.
Hope that helps!
