I have an Ideal mexico floor boiler which is around 24 years old !!
it makes a knocking noise when firing up and has done for a number of years. is it on its last legs (don't really want to buy a new boiler as still works well) or would something like the Fernox boiler noise silencer help.

Do you have a nice new car depreciating on the street outside?

There is often a great reluctance to replace a boiler although doing so can give a good return on the capital spent.

Your existing boiler is perhaps 60% efficient whereas a condensing boiler will be about 92%. 32% of the average annual gas bill at current prices is about £320. That could be a 16% return on a £2000 replacement boiler.

A new boiler would also reduce greenhouse gasses making the world a better place for my children!

You can try putting those silencer products in your old boiler. They will do no harm! They may improve it a bit but if it is seriously sludged or scaled up then it may only be a hardly noticeable difference.
