boiler timer

hi all i have a couple of questions i was hoping someone could shed some light for me

i have a worcester greenstar 24i boiler (guarentee just ran out :-<)

any way the mt10 timer has started to play up, apparently this is a common problem.

so my first question is
can i remove the boiler plastic housing to replace the timer or does it need to be done by a gas safe reg, as the competent person is quite confusing.

secondly myfriend has a dt20rf timer that would fit but there is no room thermostat would this work without it?
