Hi,

A bit of a strange one.....

We went away for the weekend and came home at midnight expecting radiators (and house) to be cold (freezing) as teh heating was switched off when we left two nights previously.

Upon our return we found the boiler was giving error code 70 and 80 (No flame detection) and stuck in a cycle of trying to ignite and then failing then trying ignite and failing again repeatedly. How long this had been going for is unknown but the boiler was working fine two days before we left.

Boiler pressure is just below 1 bar so no leaks. No hot taps were running when we returned although hot water switch set to full on boiler, central heating in the off position but radioators luke warm upon return Obviously due to constant on off cycling as mentioned above. It has been cold so possibly tried to fire frost protection and got confused? Have turned boiler off!

Any ideas what maybe the problem.....

Any help much appreciated.

sounds like low pressure switch is been activated try topping the pressure abit see if that solves your problem on the dry fire. and the frost protection is what the phantom heating will be.or you have a cold ghost :D

Thank for your help and advice, you were right when we got up this morning and turned boiler on we got two new error codes a 40 and 80 indicating low pressure, topped up and horray hot shower was not looking forward to freezing cold shower......

have topped up to one bar now and pressure seems stable so hopefully boiler wont go nuts again......

Im i right in thinking that it was combination of cold causing pressure to drop to just below limit of pressure switch and cold protection kicking in but not being able to light properly due to lack of pressure therfore getting stuck in a loop of trying to fire but failing cos of lack of pressure but trying to fire each time because of cold to protect itself.

In future if go away when cold is it worth checking pressure when cold is well above one bar?

no harm in topping upto 1.5 bar. systems can gradually lose pressure a minute drip over time can be a cause 2 pints of water in some cases. worth a quick feel round your valves i.e radiator trv lockshield bleed nut cappin nut. the frost stat will make the boiler fire mate yeah but when it when to fire the system low pressure switch wouldnt allow it to after a few trys the boilers will automatically '' lock out '' glad its sorted
