I’m looking into having a built in wardrobe, I’ve had a carpenter/joiner round and he has suggested mdf for the shelving etc and leaving it unpainted, I was suggesting white melamine but he was unhappy with that as it chiped etc. Is it OK to leave MDF unpainted (except the doors) as he said that he has done this for other people.? Any advice on what I have said would be appreciated.

Supported on 3 sides with a strip of real wood facing on the front edge, then given a coat of satin varnish to seal the surfaces and it should be OK. MDF shelves tend to sag if only supported on the two ends.

I once built a complete wardrobe out of melamine faced "chipboard". Makes me laugh now to think what a bloody awful sight it was - nothing looks as tacky as that stuff and yet the DIY stores still manage to fob it off on their well-meaning customers. That material is as bad as -if not worse than - MDF for sagging

Wipe on Danish oil, is quick to apply and dry, and seals against staining.
