Busy renovating a terraced house. This weekend I started removing some blown plaster which soon became removing all the plaster. The browning is still on the wall and in the top corner I noticed a crack in the browning. Had a closer look and found that it was a mains cable that runs diagonally down the wall from the top right corner to a two way socket about 4 foot in from the corner. The cable is plastered in and it's a good job I didn't try to knock in any nails anywhere on that wall. What's the best option?

safe zones for running cables in walls without steel conduit protection are horizontallt and/or vertically in line with the sockets, or within 150mm of the corner between two walls or wall and ceiling (but not floor).

Since there is only one cable, this is probably a spur off an upstairs socket (not ideal, but OK) Ideally, trace the cable back to the upstairs and replace it, running in the safe zones.

You could extend the cable, but if you use a junction box this has to be accessible (ie not buried and not under the floor). Otherwise use butt crimps and heat shrink and a proper ratchet crimp tool
