Are there new building regulations that say that you cannot build a downstairs toilet beside a kitchen?

I am at the planning stage of building an extension to the back of the house. Can a toilet door open onto a kitchen?

Needs 2 doors between kitchen and toilet and the toilet needs its own sink

apparently only one door is needed now provided there is an extractor fan (or adequate ventilation) and washing facilities within the room containing the loo.

Yes a WC can open onto a kitchen

The only requirement is that there are washing facilities (sink/basin) either in the WC or the room immediatly outside the WC - ie the kitchen.

This is for England and Wales, you should check the NI regs to be sure

Interestingly the loo MUST have at least one door between it and the kitchen, and its recomended that it is not transparent glass.

Its only a recomendation, depends what puts you off your cooking, or any other tasks you may do in the loo.

The answer to this perennial question is "yes".

But, if in doubt ring your building control department.

Did there used to be a reg that meant there had to be 2 doors? I ask because my next door neighbour has a downstairs bathroom which opens onto the kitchen, and within the bathroom there is another door which goes into the toilet, so theres 2 doors.

Yes there did, that is why there are lots of people who have strange "hallways" off their kitchen and tiny bathrooms because the space is taken up by the hallway. Count the number of terraced houses where there is a small useless hall at the end of the kitchen then a small bathroom. Also the old council houses where the bathroom went off the kitchen, but the loo was elsewhere.

For years this was a requirement, an essential aspect of British health and hygiene, but suddenly we enter Europe where they've had loos off the kitchen forever and suddenly it's OK here too.

IIRC, it had nothing to do with Europe, but related to a precedent Landlord and Tenant case, relating to kitchen hygeine and washing facilities. The bregs were then brought in line to this ruling.
