Old Back boiler I know and will need replacing soon but would like to keep it going another year..

Have identified that gas valve has failed but been told obsolete...Is there anywhere that I can get one from and then get a CORGI guy to fit for me..

Many thanks

I would doubt it very much, boiler is way past it's sell by date. Time to bite the bullet methinks. . . . .

If it's a Capricorn 246 1N, you might still be able to get it on special order.
GC No. 392-767 1/2" Midgitrol - McLaren UK 48 RBB05.
Personally, I would bite the bullet as dangermouse said and replace the boiler. In the long run, you would be better off financially and safety wise.

Thanks for that Gasman.. The plate on my boiler says Capricorn 246N
I notice a few places on the net appear to be selling valves for "Capricorn 246" and list Glowworm part number 203328 would this be the correct valve for mine??

As you probably know the Capricorn 246N is a combined boiler/gas fire back boiler.

If you type "capricorn gas valve" into google you will see what I mean

Try parts centre, parts of plumb centre. They have a glowworm approved universal fit GV for the old glowworms

Depends on the serial number. Early ones had a maclaren valve and later ones used a sit valve...both phenomenally expensive if I recall.

Capricorn is the fire by the way, the boiler you have is a 246

It was last year i heard they had these universal GVs. Comes with a selection of pipes and fittings to fit whichever Glowworm u need it to

Thank goodness that the Parts Centre will only supply gas components to CORGI registered installers.

At least that policy will curb the worst of DIYers excesses.

I would be very surprised if a suitable gas valve was not available.

However, exactly who has decided that the gas valve has failed ???

Agreed thats why if I can get one I'm getting a Corgi Guy to fit..

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

..Its my conclusion the gas valve has failed based on...

Pilot light working fine (Thats not brought me to the conclusion)

Boiler can be relit ok no probs

Room stat is calling pump up which is working fine 240v etc plus pumping

240V at programmer. Programmer is working fine

240 volts at boiler going into transformer

28v coming out of transformer into Boiler thermostat

28v coming out of thermostat and at two orange wires connecting to gas valve

Boiler main burner not coming on irrespective of moving boiler stat

(Other gas appliances in house working fine)

Is there anything that it may be that points to other than gas valve?

I would confirm failure of gas valve with one simple resistance check!

Tony

If it's the valve I'm thinking off pretty sure you can still get them.

Blue or brown or purple dial with pilot/off/on indicated?

McLaren I believe, mostly fitted on glowworm spacesavers & etc.

I pull them out all the time but the purple ones are rare.

Last time I priced one it was at least £120.

I think I may have one (second hand) in the shed.

I'll have a look in the morning, pretty sure it's a brown dial though.

Dare you not pass to said shed in the night now Tony? :D

Not so sure now. I've got at least one old glowworm valve but it's a SIT nova ,the one with the two solinoids.

I will check in the morning though, feck going out there tonight:cool:
