Can this be done??

It`s filling and adding treatments that I find a total pain in the backside with a sealed system, and having a 4 storey house with the boiler at the top, filling the system is a pig of a job.

I`ll definately contact Vaillant and see what they say, if it can be done then brilliant, if not hay ho, at least I know

I should add , & please bear in mind that most sealed system boilers ect have high limit or over heat thermostats that generally click in at a temp in excess of 100 degs C ( 105 ?) if you convert to an open system assuming it is possible , the high limit stat would need to be changed ( safety issue ) the same situation if you use the exp tank for a sealed system which would incorperate a non return valve on the outlet , this may fail open therefore check the rating of the limit stat !!!

actually this is one of the biggest problems with sealed systems and one I completely overlooked and not only with older people are there problems.

A novice would be wise to drain - those plugs and caps on the vent and CF can go very wrong in DIY hands!!!

only a moron could get it wrong but i accept there are plenty of them out there.

I appreciate that you think that you know more about boilers and systems than the manufacturers who designed and made it or the engineers who install and repair them.

However, we think that we are better placed to advise you.

A well installed system does not need to be regularly fiddled with or have treatments added all the time.

However, if you fit a Magnaclean then as well as attracting any magnetic bits of dirt it makes a wonderful dosing vessel. In fact thats about the best part of it.

I`m not claiming any such thing, who the hell do you think you are??

If I knew more than the manufacturers I wouldn`t have asked the question in the first place WOULD I??

Well I am sure that you can work out that I am a boiler engineer who repairs boilers!

The question that you are asking is about trying to use the boiler in a way that the manufacturers dont expect. For the reasons explained above, installers know that sealed systems are far more reliable and efficient that open vent installations. It would be a retrograde step to convert a sealed to open even if the manufacturers did allow it.
