Car not accelerating..... could this be the clutch?

Hi all,
my wife has an old 1.4 Golf (1994). Recently its starting doing something weird. In some gears as she accelerates the car doesnt actually move any faster, the number of revs goes up and the engine is working harder, but its almost as if she has the clutch pressed.

Does this sound like the clutch has gone, or something else?

How much should I expect to pay including labour to have a new one fitted?

Sounds like it could be the clutch ring around a few garages for quotes, due to forum rules, quoting is not allowed due to the variability of location, labour charges etc etc.

to test any car, park on hill with handbrake applied

put in 3 rd gear

rev enginge hard

let off handbrake gently allowing clutch to bite

if the car stalls clutch fine


good trick for second hand cars

tell your wife to use handbrake at lights and hills, incase she riding clutch
