Hi,

I had a couple of questions i hoped someone could help me with. Just moved into a victorian house and am worrying how cold the cellar will make the house. As it stands now we have what looks like a small drain cover (with holes in - doal chute once i guesss) by our frontdoor which drops straight down into the cellar, onto a small wall. i.e it's completely exposed. If you go down into the cellar and look to that wall then up you can see right outside. I can lean up and push up the drain cover from inside the cellar!

There is also a line of airbricks under the house step by the cover. I still have no idea how no rain gets into the cellar through this hole - it's rained loads recently and the cellar has stayed dry. My concern is how cold it's going to be having wind blow down into this gaping hole then straight up into the hallway and living rooms.

Can i cement / brick up the big hole in the cellar so just leaving the airbricks in and / or get a cover to go over the drain hole or will this cause damp issues? Also is there anyway to insulate the the ceiling of the cellar (which is just our hall and living room floorboards right now). There's massive gaps in the boards and when yuo turn the cellar light on it lights up the hall and living room...

The other thing is outside the middle of the bay window in the living room there's an airbrick which is fine i guess. My issue is that the house just has the original floorboards, so there's a gap across the floor which means you can see from inside the living room to the outside, from inside the house! This will obviously be pretty cold. What would be the best way to fix this outside of a laying carpet? Just get some wooden beading and place it over the gap in the living room?

Many thanks!

It sounds like there is adequate ventilation under the floor. ;)

You could fit mineral wool between the joists held against the floorboards with garden netting stapled to the joists from below. At one time Homebase were doing 8m² of 170mm mineral wool for £4. Any water pipes in the cellar would need thick lagging.
