Your heating system could be "just about working" ie the radiators just about get some heat into them.Using thermometers will confirm correct temperatures.
The pipework should be configured to give the best possible circulation,this is done by sizing the pipe runs (either by experience or calculations). Depending on how many radiators are installed,output size of radiators, kw's of boiler,size of cylinder (litres),distance/bends between boiler to cylinder/motorised valves,etc.
A sketch with measurements,length and pipe size between boiler to cylinder/motorised valve,will confirm if it is correct.As you have mentioned your property is massive.
Dont know how much work can be done from below, as mentioned you have creaking pipes,there are ways around everything,
