New to this forum ---- Hello

Now out system has been in for 25 years and we have never had too much of a problem with it . We managed to get a new condensing boiler fitted and got a bit back from the government scrappage scheme , its serviced regularly .

Now what we have never had done is the system flushed out , water replaced or had any of the valves(thermostatic) checked replaced etc . We regularly get air in the system , especially in the radiator that is in the bathroom which is linked to the water heating . I also have one valve (not the thermostatic end) that does not close off making it impossible to take that radiator off . We also get varying performance of our radiators around the house and sometimes they are really hot and another time they are just warm (its not to do with how high the thermostat , in the hall is set at)

So in short does the system (apart from the boiler) need a service/overhaul :?:

The system should have been flushed as part of the new boiler installation.
Sounds as though it would benefit from a pro's attention.

When any new boiler is fitted it is part of the procedure to clean the system.

According to its condition that may be chemical cleaning or power flushing as required.

The warrantee on the boiler will not cover any problem caused by sludge in the system.

If your installer did not clean the system then he is a cowboy. He should have completed the Benchmark Certificate. What did he show for cleaning the system?

What is the colour of water if you bleed a radiator?

To properly clean a system often takes as long if not longer, than just replacing the boiler. i wonder if he would have got the job if he had doubled the price. Let us not pass judgement without knowing the full facts Tony

DickyG, you had an old system that never broke down because boiler was made to last, had component number that could be counted on one hand, system configured like a trouser held up with belt as well as braces. Service was not carried out as it hardly ever broke down

Let us say you invite me to give you a price to fit a new boiler. You will have many options to select a boiler make and model that only you can decide- can be dirt cheap or eye watering expensive.

Then option to properly clean the system that is added to the price. You decide if you want this to inflate the price

Next comes the gas line. If it is a combi, most likely will be, almost certainly will need bigger gas line. More money required.

Radiator valves worn out and not suitable for pressurised system. More addition to the quote

System upgrade must be compliant for controls. Goodness sake this boiler change will need yet more money.

Bottom line- will you go for a boiler change that is tagged at £1199.99 or one that has a tag of £3456.78 but ticks all the boxes.
