Central heating working, but NO HOT WATER

We have recently moved into our first house which has a Baxi WM51/3RS conventional boiler.

We have programmed the timer so that the central heating and water comes on at the same time. However only the central heating works, even though the control panel shows that both have switched on.

A friend seems to think that the problem is likely to be an electrical valve in the pipeline somewhere.

To make do, we are having to use the emersion water heater, but this does not heat enough hot water to fill a bath (a must for the wife!).

Our questions to you are

a) can anybody suggested why the hot water may not be working

b) if we get this problem sorted, will this boiler provide us with enough water to fill a bath

c) a completely new combi boiler fitted in the hope that the wife can have a hot bath. BG quoted £3,385 which seems excessive.

We would be really grateful if somebody could point us in the right direction.

Thank you in advance....

do a search on three port valve or get someone to have a look, but dont pay 3 grand to bg get qoutes if you want a combi, but your system should be fine with a bit of care

....

Why anybody buys from BG is beyond me
If you do need a new boiler (after exhausting all other possibilities) phone your local Corgis who advertise in local papers for qoutes.
In my neck of the woods you can get a Worcester supplied and fitted for less than £1400

Sounds like the motorised valve is duff.

Simple things to check are that there is some water in the feed & expansion cistern (small black plastic box) in the attic.

Also there may be air in the heating coil of the hot water cylinder. Look for a stubby little vertical pipe coming off one of the pipes going into the copper hot water cylinder. If this has a small brass valve at the top try opening it to see if air comes out. Have a towel or a bowl handy because water should come out eventually if not straight away..

Thank you all for your advice.

Brumylad, are you based in B'ham as your name suggests. If so, would you be interested in looking into the above, as I am also based in B'ham
(Great Barr)?

Cheers all

With the CH switched off does the boiler fire (tank therm should be telling it to), if not, check the setting on the tank therm, should be around 55 to 60c. If the boiler is not firing, therm is probably duff, easy enough to replace. If boiler does fire, does it stay on or cycle on and off, if the latter, probably the 3 way valve duff although that would be unusual as the normal (no power to motor) position is water and valve returns to that position under a spring loaded mechanism. But that may be duff preventing the valve returning which would cause the boiler to cycle.
