Can anyone help?
I have a Primatic cylinder, that provides both central heating and hot water. The problem is that the hot water is brown, I have been told that the cylinder is now worn out and should be replaced!
Can I replace the primatic cylinder with an indirect cylinder? and if so what will I need?
I am finding it very difficult to find a primatic cylinder to replace the defective one

I've had a primatic for 29 years and it's still OK.
I can't see how it can be worn out, there are no moving parts.
I understand there is a hemisphere that creates a bubble when the cylinder is being filled, this bubble keeps the central heating water seperate from the hot water.
I guess you have lost the bubble, hence the reason why your hot water is brown.
You could drain the cylinder and refill and see if a new bubble is created.
You can convert to a more conventional system using a indirect cylinder but you have no header tank at the moment so that is one item you will need.

having never heard of a primatic cyliner, i looked it up on the web (as you do) havent found much so far, apart from it uses an airlock to seperate the water, what i did find useful was

Primatic (self priming) - only for use with gravity systems because the water for the central heating is taken from within the cylinder, and is only separated by an air lock (system additives must not be used with this type of cylinder as this will come out through the hot taps)

so has anything been added to the system?
