My 1938 house has 75mm breeze/cinder block internal walls and I need to chase in a metal box for the 10mm t&e cable shower switch. Could I use a 35mm box or would I need a 47mm box.
Ours are 2 inch thick blocks on most internal walls but it's been wet plastered with lime plus a couple of skims on top, so I could easily chase cables into the plaster. The boxes I just used a Scutch chisel once I drilled the edges, best thing I bought and no damage next door bedroom etc.
I was extremely nervous being a novice, but the only wall I had issues was a small area of cavity wall under the bay, one of the inside bricks came loose when chiseling.
The same happened on the outside when I was clearing the old paint, a loose brick, followed by another, then...
Oops.
Mortar often isn't very strong, and a lot of walls are really just a stack of bricks relying on the weight of what's above to keep them solid. So when you go bashing into it with a chisel, where there isn't much weight on it, ...
I thought there was weight on it, that wooden post is holding up the upstairs bay and part of the roof!
But I suspect the ground has shifted as there's little on the way of foundations on our house.
