Cleaning tar off concrete.

Hi,
I have just had my drive surfaced with tarmac and they made a good job of it except it was done on a drizzly day. Tarry residue has drained onto some steps leading up to the tarmac. I tried a patch of masonry paint but, as expected, the tar has burned through. How can I clean the tar off or is there a paint that will cover it? Thanks.

try some neat petrol

White spirits will dissolve tar.

Just a tad safer than petrol.
