I am upgrading my central heating.
With so many combi boilers on the go any ideas what the most reliable make is.

around £400 - 500

Buy a quality condensing boiler like the glowworm CXI or the Vailant Ecomax or Worcester Bosch a lot more than what your budget is but in the long run cheaper.

similar to gasman they are all good also look at ideal evo (the wolseley isar) have been fitting them for 3 years no problems and ideal isar / icos for 4 or more only problem one has been a batch of evo 22/30's from last year ( leaking bottom sections due to production cock up) last 2 i used have been fine
