Personally i don't like trunking, so i think the way forward is to batten a wall, line with 12.5mm plasterboard and create a void behind to pass cables down from ceiling into rear of unit.Obviously making sure the consumer unit fixes to the battens behind.
Yes it is in a cupboard and no it is not really required, but it will look nicer and give me satisfaction.
 
[shrug]Seems like a lot of effort for something that won't be seen and won't look life-changingly better than a few drops of 100mm trunking. Which would make any future additions easier too.[/shrug]

If you're putting the cables behind a false wall, why not install a flush CU?
