Instead of using a mechanical relay you could use a solid state relay.
One suitable would be
http://www.opto22.com/site/pr_details.aspx?cid=4&item=IAC15A which provides a low ( transistor to 0v ) when mains power is present.
A single transistor and a couple of resistors can be used to drive an LED to be ON when the IAC15A output goes high when mains fails.
