I agree with everything you've written, bernardgreen, but consider the difference between these two statements:
A. Please remember that your lecturer needs to be aware that you've found it easier to gain this knowledge from a forum than in his* lectures. If you tell him, then you and the other students stand to gain from any improvements that he can make.
B. You're a fool, and your lecturer is no better. Neither of you deserves the time it would take me to give you a polite and helpful reply.
The same point, but poles apart in presentation. Now consider where in that spectrum the statement beginning "So your lecturer now has no idea..." sits.
