Hi, in a week or so i`m going to be stripping my friends roof off and renewing it.

He lives in a semi-detached 4 hipper with slates on, i`m only doing his roof so obvioulsy will be stopping at half way with the new slates.

Im going to be installing a grp bonding gutter where the 2 roofs will join, my question what is the correct way of installing the bonding gutter underneath next doors slates, as i won`t be able to strip back his slates to lay the gutter underneath.

Speaking to some roofers who do "private" jobs more regular than me say
"pull out the half slates, de nail 1 side of the full slates, slide it in, and re nail" But i won`t be able to renail the half slates obviously, and "sealing" them in with sealant doesn`t seem the best option.

Idealy you need to strip into next door to allow the grp to go under next doors slates either that or you keep the grp within your friends roof area which will make the roof look smaller than next door.In my eyes using sealent to stick your slates in is a cowboy bodge ,try going to the neighbour and explain what your doing as you'll probably need to stagger the slates all the way up the roof going without knowing the size of the slates roughly about a couple across into next door and double nailing the slates on one side every second slate all the way up leaving enough space for nailing your halves .I have been re doing semi's and terraced houses for years and never really come across any problems with the clients neighbours

you should strip the slates around 3 courses beyond the party wall to allow plenty of cover for your felt as well as fitting the bonding gutter.
neighbours are normally quite compliant when the process is properly explained to them.

cheers for the replys, puts my mind at rest as i was thinking all last night i would have to strip some of the next doors roof but i wasn`t sure the correct way to deal with them.

Ill give them a knock when i start.
