Not being up with oil fired boilers but surely these oil systems come with filters and water traps, do they not? You would think that someone would have come up with something to effectively trap the water before it gets anywhere near the burner/pump?
The level in my tank has to be ~ 60/80 litres above the tank bottom so this means that a vol of water would need to build up to this level before it entered the pump?.
The water trap isn't a bad idea though but have yet to see one.
In over 50 years I've probably seen 4 or 5 fitted grand total of one (specified on a school)
Using a decent oil supplier and maintaining tank correctly should cover it.
I recall fitting metal tanks slightly out of level with the lowest point at the opposite end to the supply tap , the bung at the low point had drain tap in the centre to drain off any water.
