we have an old meter cabinet at home and need it replacing with a split load cu,as we are installing a new shower and a garage which will also need a supply, the meter cabinet only has 6 ways and all are being used, what i would like to know before i get a quote is this, will the cabinet have to be taken down and scrapped completely and a new cu fitted or is there some kind of skeleton board which fits into an existing cabinet offering rcd protection ? ie:split load board, the cabinet is in the hallwy about a metre up from the floor and it isnt going to look very nice having the meter and time switch and cu on display, all of the circuits come down from above into the cabinet,so extending isnt really an issue,

If it's still a council owned house then your not able to do anything to it.
You will need to contact/inform/get permission from - the council/owners.

A photo of what you currently have will help someone advise you what to do.
As would a list of what is currently supplied from the Cu & what you intend to add to it.
:)

my mistake, its an ex council property,,we want to add an electric shower, plus we need a supply to the garage for lights and power and maybe an extra way for anything else that might be added at a later date, dont have a digi camera to post a pic but if its any help the 6 fuses are at the top next to the main switch and below is the meter and time switch and the incomer is below that,,all inside the cabinet,,,it would be really handy and tidy if the cabinet could stay and the new cu installed inside if poss

A photo of your existing setup, and some dimentions of the cabinet and existing fuseboard would help us here.

Modern skellington boards are still available, but a split load CU is unlikely to comply with the current wiring regs.

(Anyone spot the Steve Wright gag in that post?)

Round here the council or housing trust as they are now fit the new split load unit above the old metre cabinet.
With the new circuits run from above on the surface in PVC trunking.

You may find that all your existing circuits are run in steel conduit, which termiantes back into the cabinet. In which case it'll be fun trying to remove it and keep your cables intact!

Might be better to run new circuits to a new board?
