I need to cut about 6 mm off the back of a ceramic cistern lid.

Any ideas how to do this (and what tools to use) to minimise chance of damaging or chipping the surface finish

Could try an angle grinder with a diamond cutting disc but will be messy and won't look very good :(
Have you no play in the toilet to allow it to come forward the reqd 6 mm :)

You'd probably find it easier to scrape 6mm of plaster off the wall.

First I'd jam summat behind the cistern and see if it leaked when it was flushed. If not, I'd leave it like that, unless it really showed.

Thanks for the suggestions

I could not find a summat, but used an old thingy to move the cistern away from the wall. To my surprise (it is a close coupled toilet) there was enough play to make the lid fit ok

Thanks again
