Hi there,
I wonder if someone can help me... while pulling up our carpet in the living room, I notice that there was some damp patches on the underside, and it appears that there is damp coming up through the floor (white powder formed under the carpet). The house is a 1950's semi-detached former council house. It appears that it is a concrete floor with +/- 10mm thick black (bitumen??) tiles on top of it. The damp appears to be coming through where the tiles are missing or are damaged. I guess that these tiles are used as the damp proofing.
Can these tiles be replaced? Do I need to dig up the floor and lay a new damp proof membrane, or as a friend suggested (he is not particularly an expert) can I have bitumen layer poured on top of these tiles to seal it off?
There are no signs of damp coming through any of the walls, and have now noticed patches of the damp in the floors of some of the other ground floor rooms.
Any advise is much appreciated.
Thanks
Mike
