l have had a gas fitter in as we could smell gas near our fire he has turned it off at the inlet pedestal as he mentioned the seal inside would need replacing before turning it back on and he did'nt have one with him..
l said leave it turned off as we was going to get a new fire anyway and that had made our minds up...
So what l would like to know is can l disconnect the fire from the pedestal and cap it or is this a no no...
If l can does it need capping..
The reason l'm asking this is l want to get the gas fire out and tiles and surround off as we want a hole in the wall gas fire and when we get a fitter out for a quote he can see what room there is inside the chimney and brick work needed.. l have the installation measurements already for the fire we want..

It's your home so you can do as you please. However what you describe would be considered illegal gas work. Furthermore if your RGI found a gas leak after the isolator, then that must be treated as immediately dangerous so would have to be disconnected and capped off, with your permission.

As above, plus would you have the tools/knowledge to test it ?
