Dishwasher air gap has water pouring out of it

This stared about 1 month ago, every time we run the dishwasher the air gap starts spewing water out of it to the point where it will cover the counter with water. And about 10min while we were running the dishwasher water started backing up into the sink while water was coming out the overflow. I ran the disposal and it went back down.

do you put fat or cooking oil down it?

Hey you were right! I saw your reply and took off the drain hose and sure enough there was stuff in there partially blocking it. No oil but of all things pieces of fish. Cleaned it out ran a short cycle and no water! Thanks you so much!
