I currently have a clip on lamp with a 60watt bulb in the attic and it's a load of rubbish so i'm thinking of replacing it with a 5 foot 58w fluorescent light like we have in the kitchen, so as i want to run the light from a plug do i need to know anything before buying a fluorescent light.

and make sure the flex leading from the plug to the light is appropriately restrianed so that someone pulling on the plug doesn't stress the terminations. Lights designed for fixed wiring won't have a cord grip so you will have to find some other way of restraining the flex (such as using a compression gland and/or clipping it to a beam with multiple clips.
