Double switch to Single?

Hello,

I have a double switch in my kitchen, each switch controls one half of my kitchen ceiling lights. Is it possible to take out the double switch and just replace it with one single switch?

Yes, firstly mark the wires so they don't get muddled.
Mark the two wires which have a link between as a first pair and
the other two as a second pair.

Discard the link.
Then in your new switch put the first pair in the supply terminal and
the second pair in the load terminal.

If your new switch is metal it must be earthed.

If it is also a dimmer make sure it is correctly rated for the lights.

Ensure first that the total load ( watts ) of the lamps is within the range of the new switch.

One of the wires marked in red is the feed from the fuse box. The other wire marked in red is the feed on to other lamps / switches
These must be connected together in the same terminal of the new switch.

The wire marked in black will be redundant when there is only one switch and can be discarded.


The two wires marked in yellow are the switched Lives to the lamps controlled by these two switches.
These need to be connected together in the same terminal on the new switch.
