hi i want to wire up down lighters in my kitchen this will be from a new cu in an extension then continue from downlighters with 2 pendant lights on the end of the circuit. where will my switch cables go any help many thanks
If you are intending to switch both the downlighters and the pendant lights using one switch:
From 6A MCB using 1.5mm^2 cable to switch connect:
Phase (brown) to common terminal.
Neutral (blue) into a connector block.
Earth (bare but with green+yellow sleeving) to switch if metal or to another connector block if not.
Using 1.5mm^2 cable from switch connect:
Phase (brown) to L1 terminal.
Neutral (blue) into the connector block with other neutral conductor.
Earth (bare but with green+yellow sleeving) to switch if metal or to the connector block with other earth conductor.
Then connect the first fitting to the other end of that cable. To connect the others just connect each light to the last ensuring earth continuity.
Of course this assumes the downlighters are 230v not 12v. If the downlighters are 12V then you can't mix them with mains voltage pendant fittings. Separate switches/cables will be needed.
Oh. and since the work involves adding a new circuit and new consumer unit connections the work is notifiable.
you need the load, length of run and whether there is any insulation (may be a single storey extension insulation) before you choose the cable.
It's fairly safe to go for a 6A breaker.
