Drilling tiles

Hi
We're in the process of fitting a shower enclosure and tried drilling the tiles last night. Not sure what drill bit we used, but it didn't make any impression on the tiles - though it heated the drill bit up nicely. Is there a particular type of drill bit we should be using?
Thanks

Thought it would be something obvious :D

Can we use a masonry drill bit and just put a bit of masking tape over the (eventual) hole to stop it slipping?

Or do I just bite the bullet and buy the right bit - seems a bit pointless when it's only got to do 4 holes........

Thanks

yes masonery bit "NO" hammer untill through the tile and only then as a last resort

masking tape as you say for location and dip it in water to keep cool and hard

if you heat metal and cool it slowly it goes soft
if you quench it in oil or water it hardens it [but only if its past the red hot stage]
