I have a durgo valve fitted to the the top of the stack in the loft, this valve is not spring loaded works under its own weight, but every now and then in the night i can smell sewer gas not all the time, how would this valve become faulty!

Durgo may not be faulty! They are actually an 'air admittance valve' (AAV), and as name suggest, will allow air in but wont allow positive pressure out. There should be an open vent elsewhere on the system to ventilate the drains, if not then any build up of pressure in the drain will 'bubble' up through traps in the system, hence giving you the smell.

the smell is in the room where the aav is no other wastes nearby, funnily enough i havent smelt it for a few days
