H i does anyone know what old Durium tipped masonry brill bits are actually coated with? ie what is Durium? there is almost no current information specifying whether it is an actual compound trade name. Durium drill bits are not now widley available. Any info would be good Thanks

Weren't these withdrawn after they were found to cause Gulf War syndrome?

Anyway IIRC, Durium was (is?) an alloy of silicon bronze, was tough and also used for ink pen knibs, record player needles and fine saws and suchlike. It was trademarked by a yank company, but I'm not sure if it was the actual alloy or the process.

Replaced by tungsten for drill bits which was cheaper and no royalties - not sure if better though?
