Edit: The wiring is not as I thought. This question is now redundant. Mods feel free to delete.

Do not do this: If there is no cpc in the cable, it should be replaced, or the fittings replaced with double insulated ones and plastic switches.

Is there anything wrong with earthing it to the gas main pipe, which is in turn already earthed through the fuse box?
Just to add to securespark's reply, use of a gas pipe as an earth, or as a 'protective conductor' (i.e. a connection to an earth) is explicitly forbidden by the Wiring Regulations - for fairly obvious reasons.

Kind Regards, John

And it's illegal on at least one count, probably two (as in the gas regulations probably prohibit it - they ought to).

But have you really got a garage with an unearthed electricity supply?

I take it you have no sockets in the garage you could use?
