My partner insists that I switch the television off when we go to bed and not leave it on "Standby" as she says it will use 80% of the electricity. However she still leaves the Washing machine switched on when it has finished.

I think that 80% consumption is a bit of an exaggeration for a television. Has anyone got any realistic figures.

Does it apply to all electrical appliances, like Washing Machines etc... :?: :?:

Here's one of them, loads more in google

The Government is going to ban standby button anyway, constant turning on and off the TV will shorten the life of the TV (?)

i checked all tvs and videos in my house and they ranged from about 2% to 30% the average was around 17% on stanby

Apparently it costs an average of £37 per year per household (heard on TV yesterday).

Well it was on the BBC news actually. I guess it must be lies then eh?

BTW - what's the abuse for?

Hardly worth us bothering -- another big con leading to higher taxes..

Just parused this official USA site
http://www.eia.doe.gov/
Noted this
http://www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/steo/pub/wf01.html

Average US consumer - electricity usage - for the 6 month winter period 05-06 = 8,104 kWh at $0.096 per kWh ( £0.05 per KwH).

I paid £0.096 per kWh same period... Using just 2190 kWh.
Save the planet??? - I used but 27% of the US average, paying 92% more per unit...
