Washing machine taking in water when not switched on.

My daughter recently had a problem with washing machine taking in water and filling drum when appliance was not switched on. She had another washing machine given by a friend, which was in good working order, only to find the same problem ocurred. Has anyone experienced a
similar problem. Could it be a problem with mains water pressure?

waste pipe down too low sink water going into drum ,could be faulty valve but on 2 mcs i dont thing so .
