i have a escort 1600cc zetec petrol injection engine saloon, and just lately the tickover which was allways ok has developed a mind of its own .
i cannot see or hear any air leaks etc anywhere, but have had to disconect the battery to give the alternator some attention / could that be whats caused the trouble ? help/advice please. r.r.

Hi there...
Disconnecting the battery will force the engine management system into its self learn status and it will need to learn all its 'favourite' engine control settings. This can lead to the idle control valve operating in a position its not used to. This position can be a previously un-used position and as a result of lack of use, may be dirty. The usual removal of the I.A.C. valve and a clean out with Carb-Cleaner; along with another disconnection of the battery would be the first thing to do...

I had a similar problem with my Pug 206. Half a bottle of Redex injector cleaner later, and it runs perfectly.

thanks for answers, duly noted ./ can you please tell me where the iac valve is ? i have a haynes manual but havent found it as yet, is it the part which screws on at the left hand side of manifold ? looking from front of car. cheers. r.r. [ ps. in answer to the redex sugestion i allways put a drop of redex in when i fill up . ]. r.r.

Not sure of the exact position...likely to be near throttle body (where throttle cable attaches to inlet manifold). Usually held on by two screws with a plug with maybe three but usually four wires.

thanks for imfo , i will have a look where you say, and also take a closer look in the haynes manual/ now i know what im looking for. cheers. r.r. :)

thanks simannjo , found a part on left side of intake opposite side to the throttle cable , held on with 2 small screws and a wire connector on end of it / removed it very carefully and cleaned it etc, added some wd40 also then reconected battery which i had disconected. now seems a lot better. cheers, regards. r.r.

That'll be the fella, IAC valves are sometimes called "stepper motors" so might say that in Haynes.

Still if its cleaned now all well and good
