I think there should be some idiot-proof mechanism on the double-pole main breakers that you get in consumer units, to prevent you from accidentally screwing in the busbar to both Live and Neutral terminals on the bottom of it. Then turning the juice on.

thinking about it, wouldnt the service fuse blow almost instantly in this instance if this had happened (dead short, 1000's of amps)?

SparkyTris doesn't actually say this happened, he may just be hypothesising

but i hope he can provide pictures if it did happen

Can't remember the characteristics of service fuses.

It comes down to which part of the 'circuit' heats up quickest. If the fuse got there first then all is calm, if not then all is bright. Either way, a silent night would soon follow....
