hi,
i have a down stairs electric shower, i am wanting to move the shower up stairs. would it be ok to join the cable under the floor boards to extend the cable to reach the new location? if so what would be the correct and safe means to do so?

If it is under the floor then there is more than a good chance that it will be/become inaccessible. Ideally the cable needs to renewed, but if you must join then it should be properly crimped. ie with a ratchet style crimping tool.

Ryan:

1) The work is notifiable, so you must apply for Building Regulations approval before you do it.

2) After extending, and before energising, the new circuit must be checked for polarity, insulation resistance and continuity/fault loop values. LABC are supposed to do that in return for the fee you pay them, but read this to be pre-warned about the sort of slopey-shouldered stuff they might get up to.

You need to calculate whether the new cable length is any longer and look at the voltage drop that might be a factor. If you don't know how to do this then get a registered electrician in - you'll save the Bldg Control fees then.
