I noticed yesterday that all the houses in our row there does not appear to be any lintels across wondows/doors and the bricks are all laid flat across gaps. Is there any explanation for this as i thought the bricks would have been laid the opposite way to distribute the load evenly?

There are 'box type things' above every window/door internally. Are these lintels?

The house is roughly 1960's.

thanks

There may not be lintels spanning the external leaf of masonry. In t' olden days it was common practice to build straight onto the heads of doors and windows.

Strong timber mullions would take up the initial the load. Arching would take care of it once the brickwork had set.

In the 60's and 70's we usually put brick tor in the 3 courses over the frame, although some left it out, especially when on price work.
The problems start when they are replaced with plastic.
