Hi
The extractor fan in our bathroom has worked for a few years. The electrician set it so that you turn the fan on - if needed - and off using an isolation switch.

Then over the past few months it works for a bit and makes grinding noises and then stops. Or it stops for a bit and then come back on.

Then for the past few weeks it now seems to only come on if the light is on AND we press the isolation switch. It then turns itself off after a bit if the light is switched off.

What could have caused this change? I dont mind it working this way, but how has it chanegd. Anything I should be concerned about?

grinding noise suggests the bearings are worn out, or something has shifted in the cover or fan so it rubs.

time to chuck it out and buy a new one. They need not be expensive, but quality varies

please post a photo of yours, and of its switch(es)

Has anybody recently made electrical changes, such as fitting a new lamp?

What you’re describing (or at least seems to be) is a timer fan which will normally continue for a set time after the light is turned off.

The grinding sound is the fan wearing out (bearings) so you can wait for it to fail or get an electrician to advise, and install a new one as necessary.

Good quality whisper quiet fans with decent bearings are available, if you’re prepared to pay a little more

Blup
